Le clavecin hanté by Jean Joseph Renaud is a collection of short stories written in the early 20th century. The pieces blend the fantastic, psychological, and criminal, staging clever hoaxes, scientific thought experiments, and quiet tragedies where belief and reality blur. Among the varied protagonists are a crafty village guide, a brilliant but doomed biologist, a reader transfixed by a serpent’s “gaze,” and lovers and friends trapped by honor and appearances.
The opening of the collection spans several sharply etched tales: in wartime Picardy, the strabismic guide Laquinte lures occupying Bavarian officers to a “haunted” harpsichord, drugs their feast, fakes Gluck’s ghost with a music box and costume, and enables a French night assault. A second story is the confession of biologist Athanase Gille, who perfects a rejuvenation serum, restores three elders to youth, but learns they keep the disenchanted mind of age; he destroys his formula and kills himself.
