"Tom Gillies" by Mrs. George Gladstone is a children's novel written in the late 19th century. It follows a mischievous island boy whose impulses and bad companionship collide with stern discipline and gentle influences, charting his first steps from defiance toward conscience. The opening of the novel presents Norton Island and nearby Dixtown, where lively Tom, the sixth of eleven, runs wild with his daring friend Dick Potter until his mother places him with Miss Pringle, a severe baker. Before leaving, the boys steal a last day out in a borrowed boat, and later a cruel prank leads to the loss of Tom’s grandmother’s cherished cat, whose quiet burial underscores the harm he has caused. We also meet Mother Crampton, a kind, devout shopkeeper, and Miss Pringle’s lodgers: the ailing Mr. Newton and his capable daughter Annie, who befriends Tom and lends him a devotional booklet.
