La Carmélite by Ernest Daudet is a novel written in the late 19th century. Set around the Carmelite convent at Beaucaire, it follows the devout Nicolette Suarez, poised to take the veil, who sacrifices her vocation to shield her sister Irène after a clandestine love affair erupts, drawing in the hussar Frédéric de Varimpré, the jealous husband Jacques Malivert, and the compassionate Abbé Cardenne in a drama of faith, family duty, and desire.
The opening of the novel paints the convent’s stark serenity before tracing Nicolette’s fervent decision to enter the Carmel, affirmed by the prioress and sealed in prayer. At home, the contrast with her sister Irène’s gilded yet loveless marriage sharpens, until a midnight crisis explodes: Malivert surprises Irène with Frédéric, shots are fired, and Irène drags the officer into Nicolette’s room, begging her to claim him.
