"The Mantooth" by Christopher Leadem is a science fiction/fantasy novel written in the early 21st century. The story follows a young tribesman named Kalus, who grapples with his identity after being banished from his tribe for sparing the life of a starving wolf. As he attempts to survive in a harsh and dangerous world filled with prehistoric creatures and remnants of a fallen civilization, Kalus encounters a girl named Sylviana, who emerges from a mysterious past of her own. The narrative explores themes of survival, compassion, and the struggle between primal instincts and human emotion. At the start of the narrative, Kalus wakes up to find a lone wolf trying to steal food from his tribe's cave. Instead of allowing his tribesmen to kill the wolf, he intervenes, leading to his expulsion from the tribe and leaving him to navigate life as an outcast. As he wanders through the valley, he soon encounters Sylviana, who is living a sheltered life within a cave filled with strange artifacts
